Awakening to the truth is as simple as taking your attention away from the mind. It is experiencing what is, directly, without looking through the minds filters. You experience everything directly, unclouded by thought. Your perception is uncontaminated, and pure. In the awakened state you experience an open, effortless, embracing of life.
This is sometimes called enlightenment.
It’s really just enlightenment to the truth that is revealed, when you let go of mind identification, the continual thinking, and the minds endless stories and analysis. It is what happens when you let go of the dreaming mind.
It really is much like awakening from a dream.
How much effort is required to let go of dreams in the morning when you awake?
Do you have to make an effort to let go?
No you just let them go and they fade away.
This is awakening.
What do you find when you awaken from the noisy dream of mind?
You discover that you have been lost in a dreaming mind, and know that you are not who you thought you were. You discover the truth. At last you can see what you have been missing all along, while you were caught in thinking. In a moment you can see what all the awakened ones were trying to say. You see how all the words you read, or heard, were misinterpreted by the mind. You discover that you are, and always have been, the pure empty awareness in which the thoughts you have been watching, appear and disappear. You know that you are pure effortless presence, here and now, in this eternal moment. When you know truth directly you are no longer fooled by the mind, and its mischief.
It is the end of suffering.
Its too simple!
It is so simple that most people miss it.
I know, I did!
I missed it over and over again!
Why do you miss it?
You miss it because you are looking for something else!
The mind is always looking for something of interest,
...another story, another emotion, deeper understanding, another better experience or sensation. The mind is looking for something that it can take hold of, something it can control or experience.
But empty awareness is not an experience so there is nothing of interest there. Nothing to control or take hold of there! Empty awareness is what you are, but it gets overlooked all the time, because there are more interesting things to catch your attention. Emptiness can’t be of much use can it! It doesn’t look very interesting to your mind, so the mind ignores it.
This empty awareness is the secret you have been looking for, but you have been missing it all this time.
Don't complicate it ...it is simple!
Enlightenment is a done deal!
You are already it.
It is just your focus on thinking that is hiding it from you.
All you need to do is release your grip on the mind.
Just let go, and the secret is revealed.
The only reason you don’t awaken to the truth is because you continue with the mind’s story
You have lost yourself in dreams of yesterday and tomorrow.
Return to here and now, it is where your life is being lived.
The truth is awakening can only happen right now
Yes, this moment, now!
Let go of your grip on the mind and you are free.
Stop trying to get it!
Stop trying to understand!
Stop trying to find something!
Stop trying to work it out with your mind!
Just let go of all effort, simply relax and be what you already are,
…then you are free of the dream,
...then you have awakened to the truth!
...then you have returned home!

Lately I've been using sound to help me quiet my mind. I can't do it for very long, yet, but I focus on the sounds that surround me, like the ceiling fan, the crickets, the dogs snoring, and I just listen, without thoughts. It's difficult to remain in this state for long. I wonder how long enlightened people can keep the thoughtlessness.
Sophia, you are doing exactly the right thing. Focusing on the world around you helps take you out of the continual thinking of the mind, and returns you to the present moment. Putting your attention onto what you hear, see, smell taste or feel (like the wind or the sun, or cup of coffee in your hand) helps to stop the habit of continuous thinking, and introduces a new habit of being
present now with what is. This habit (let’s call it meditation like everyone else does) over time gains energy and momentum and you will find yourself more and more awakening from thought into presence. If you persevere you will find yourself more and more in presence.
What may help is to really listen, listen deeply, not with labels of the mind, but with your heart. Notice the rhythm of a sound, its texture its. When you listen to a sound, feel it too, explore and feel every subtle nuances of the sound. Reach out and touch the sound with your awareness let it inside you.
When you are meditating on being present with the sounds you can hear, you may find that the mind has a habit of labeling what you hear, and pulling you into thought. You may hear Peabody snoring, and thinks that is so cute (it is!), and then you may drift of remembering other cute things about Peabody, and so on. Sometime later, as one thought has led to another, you may again remember presence, and return to this moment. You may have been lost in thought for a while but that’s ok, it natural, thinking is a strong habit. But now you are back in presence again which is good. You have come home again.
Thinking is a strong habit, you have been doing it all your life, and it is much harder to kick the habit than smoking.
What you are doing is exactly the right thing, keep it up! Kick the habit of continuous thought.
I will write an essay on this to answer your question more fully.
peace
Thank you, Vinito. I really like the way you explain things.
I do have a tendency to label things when I'm meditating on sound. Like, "Oh, those are crickets," etc. I tried it again tonight, outside. I closed my eyes so I could focus, and I felt the cold wind blowing on my skin, and listened to the crickets. I tried not to think but it seems like somewhere deep in my mind, I'd say to myself, "That is the cold wind," and, "Those are the crickets". Even when I don't say these things aloud in my head, it's as if they are there deep within my mind, almost at the subconscious level.
I look forward to reading more of your blog.
